#FILMFRIDAYS 5TH JUNE: PICK A SIDE: BLACK OR LESBIAN

In a week where global protests calling for justice for George Floyd and countless other victims of racism, harassment and brutality have dominated the news, Film with Pride returns with a short film that discusses the experience and prejudices faced by lesbians in the black community.

Pick A Side: Black or Lesbian, will be available to stream from the Film with Pride Facebook Page from 5pm on Friday 5th June until midnight on the same day.

On Saturday 6th June, we’ll also be sharing the inspiration behind the film from its creator, Sychelle-Kristina Yanda, over on the LCR Pride Foundation news pages.

Pick A Side: Black or Lesbian (12A)

Running Time: 25 mins approx

Sychelle-Kristina Yanda interviews lesbians in the UK, US and France to create a comparative piece that speaks on the perception of lesbians within the black community.

She speaks to each person about their experiences with their sexuality, coming out to their parents (if they have) and if they faced any hardship when coming out and discussing why, if they did. One interviewee speaks on how “she is not a lesbian anymore because Jesus told her not to” revealing a “fear” of sexuality that is deep-rooted and comes from both religion and culture.

In the film Sychelle also speaks to each participant about what they feel adds to the homophobic approach within the black community and draws conclusions from those conversations.

Producer, Director, Writer, Interviewer and Editor – Sychelle-Kristina Yanda
Camera and Sound – JP Murungi, Blessing-Nicole Yanda
Interviewees – Keeka Stanbury, Ndidi-Amake Moemeke, Tamina Seremba (UK), Pierette Pyram, Robbie Williams (US)
