Sunday 26th April, is Lesbian Visibility Day, a celebration of women-loving-women and the vibrancy and diversity of the lesbian community across the globe. It’s also a significant platform for lesbian role models, creators and content.
With this in mind, we asked our Film with Pride programmer, Joan Burnett, to share her top five favourite lesbian films (at the moment at least) for your viewing pleasure.
Pariah (U)
“Pariah is a truly brilliant film that focuses on a young African American lesbian and her struggle for her identity, as well as recognition of her creativity. It’s luscious, funny and truthful. I saw myself in the main character and the film features is a rare, believale butch lesbian character too.”

Carmen + Lola (12)
“This was the first LGBT+ film to come out of Spain’s Roma community and is a real work of love. It was filmed with mainly non-professional actors from the community who turn in fantastic performances. You really care about these characters – I’m waiting for a sequel!.
Unfortunately you can only access the trailer on Youtube but it’s so good it’s worth ordering the DVD!”
Better Than Chocolate (15)
“Released in 1999, this is a lighthearted, fun and touching film about family and love, as the characters explore some experiences that are, well… better than chocolate! I can’t believe this film is 20 years old, it feels like yesterday!”

Mamma + Mamma (15)
“This film follows the story of a lesbian couple trying for a baby. Not easy in ultra-traditional southern Italy. It’s so beautiful to look at and very funny – it features the WORST flatmate ever! If you’re missing travelling, this film will make you feel as though you can taste the olives and smell the sunshine.”

Spider Lilies (18)
“This superb Taiwanese film uses great delicacy to explore the stories of two young women, looking back into their past. Taiwanese cinema is always stylish and not afraid to cover LGBT+ subjects and this story struck a real chord with me.”
