Film with Pride has revealed the next three films in its exciting 2019 programme, Lizzie, a second screening of the extraordinary Sauvage and Rafiki.

Folklore in itself, this retelling of the brutal events of 1892 centres around headstrong Lizzie Borden, who lives with her wealthy father, stepmother, and sister in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie lovingly tends to her pet pigeons and is occasionally allowed out of her dimly lit, foreboding house, but otherwise lives under strict rules set by her domineering father. When her family hires live-in maid Bridget, the two find kindred spirits in one another.
Lizzie asks us to re-examine this famously notorious tale of of a murderous daughter: to unpick the insidious, cruel abuses of power abundant in patriarchal systems and female subjugation that can break the human spirit with such devastating consequences. A second screening of this extraordinary film back after the acclaim it received on its first outing here in Liverpool. Powerful and beautiful, Sauvage follows free spirit Leo as he sells his body on the street for cash. Men come and go but he remains, stuck in the same place and longing for love. Screening to be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A, with guests soon to be confirmed.

Fresh from BFI Flare, Rafiki has been requested by local LGBT+ community members. Set against the backdrop of the bustling streets of Nairobi, the two very different girls must choose between love and safety surrounded by insular gossip, local politics and burgeoning maturity. Their magnetic pull draws us into a queer Romeo and Juliet romance, as they try to hide their relationship from their politically opposing fathers.
Directed by Wanuri Kahiu, part of a strong cohort of Kenyan female filmmakers, Rafiki was the first Kenyan film to be included in the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes earlier this year and was then controversially banned from being shown in Kenya by the Kenya Film Classification Board.
